Introduction
Railroad Engines, Passenger and Freight Cars are – if nothing else – rolling billboards for the railroad. As such, these large and very expensive pieces of equipment are what the general public thinks of as “the railroad”. While the Burlington Northern, as pictured here, is only a memory, railroads prefer we think of them as a good corporation rather than a bad one, even if that corporation no longer exists.
The Mega-Merger
As noted in previous posts, railroads are a business. Pretty as the color schemes of many railroads were, they do not take away from the business of generating revenue; though it should be noted that the corporate identity of railroads is aimed at adding to the bottom line, or if nothing else, producing a positive image of the railroad in the mind of the public.
Paint What You Know
Among the many things Bob Ross is known for, one which he mentions often is where he lived. You are surely familiar with the mountains he paints being from his years in Alaska. Similarly, the Burlington Northern paint scheme reflects the landscape in which it operated.
